PREVIEW: Men’s Hockey goes on the Road for Non-Conference Action this Weekend

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team looks to pick up a pair of non-conference victories as it travels to Northfield to take on St. Olaf College on Friday night and face Saint Mary's University in Winona on Saturday night.

About the Saints
Record: 1-1-0, 1-1-0 NCHA

  • The Saints split a pair of games last weekend against UW-Superior, defeating the Yellowjackets 5-1 in the first contest, and losing the second contest 4-6.
  • CSS is ranked 12th in the preseason D3hockey.com poll and is just outside the USCHO.com Division III poll.
  • The Saints have ten players with points already this season. Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) leads the way with two goals and two assists, while Ryne Bodger (Duncan, British Columbia/Cowichan Secondary (Merritt-BCHL) ) and Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) have three assists each.
  • CSS has scored nine goals in its first two games, third in the NCHA to St. Norbert and UW-River Falls.
  • The Saints' penalty kill unit has only allowed one goal on 14 power plays so far this season.
  • On the flipside, CSS averages nearly twice as many penalty minutes as their opponents and lead the nation with 52 penalty minutes per game.


About the Oles

  • The Oles were picked third in the 2012-13 MIAC Men's Hockey Preseason Coaches' Poll, behind St. Thomas and Gustavus. The Oles lost to Gustavus last year in the MIAC finals.
  • The Oles have lost four All-MIAC players, Derek Grogan, Ben Lies, Charlie Raskob and Peter Rohn. Grogan was an ACHA First Team All-America selection last season, while Raskob accounted for 24 points last season and Rohn was tied for the leading goal scorer in the MIAC.
  • Two-time All-MIAC Honorable Mention pick Ross Trousdale looks to lead the way for the Ole offensive attack this season.
  • Junior twins Kevin and Jeff Harris also scored 18 points each for the Oles last season.
  • The Oles were defeated by the Auggies in a 3-2 loss on Saturday, but tied St. Thomas 2-2 on Sunday.
  • The Oles also defeated the Norwegian U-18 team 5-1 in an exhibition game on Halloween.

About the Cardinals
Record: 1-1-0, 0-0-0 MIAC

  • Saint Mary's will by led by senior Kevin Wentland  and All-MIAC forward Austin Balko, who scored 20 points a year ago.
  • Through two games, Bobby Thompson is tied for second in goals (2) and points (3) in the MIAC, while Joey Van Antwerp is tied for second with a pair of assists.
  • Goaltender Andy Scheib is third with 32 saves, and Mike Hill is tied for first in +/- with a +3.
  • The Cardinals have been on both sides of blowouts this season, as they downed Bethel 7-2 in their season opener on Saturday, but were defeated by Saint John's in an 8-1 rout on Sunday.
  • The Cardinals host UW-Superior on Friday night before taking on CSS for their parent's night on Saturday.

  • The Saints have won the past three games against Saint Mary's, outscoring the Cardinals 20-7 in those contests.
