Men’s Soccer Unable to Get Any Offense in Loss to No. 16 Knights

Box Score NORTHFIELD, Minn. (csssaints.com) – 16th-ranked Carleton College scored two first half goals in handing the St. Scholastica men's soccer team its first loss in a month with a 2-0 decision on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Saints, who have scored 27 goals in their last three games and lead NCAA Division III in goals scored, saw their eight-game win streak come to an end.

The Knights (10-1-1) got their first goal of the contest exactly seven minutes in as Neil Bartholomay headed in a free kick. Then in the 21st minute, following a Carleton corner kick, Branden McGarrity picked up the rebound off of a deflected shot and finished it from the middle of the box to make it 2-0 Knights.

The best scoring chance for the Saints came in the 28th minute as Erik Trochimchuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) had a free kick just outside the box and left of the goal. His shot would get through the wall and hit the left post and roll across in front of the net, but rolled harmlessly out of play.

CSS would get just one shot on net in the second half as Carleton prevailed to remain unbeaten in its last seven matches and snap a two-match losing streak to the Saints.

Adam Hewitt (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic HS) made four saves in the loss for St. Scholastica, while Keenan Smith made two saves to earn the shutout for the Knights. Carleton had a 13-5 shot advantage in the contest. This marked the first time this season the Saints gave up more than one goal in a contest.

The Saints (10-3) will be at home on Thursday when they return to conference action to face North Central University. Action is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Saints Field. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
