Box Score 2 DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team split a pair of matches Wednesday night as it downed Northland College in three sets, but then came up short against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the nightcap.
In their victory over the LumberJills, the Saints would win the first two sets 25-19, 25-20, and then broke the third set open, winning convincingly 25-12.
Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) led CSS, earning 17 kills and 13 digs.
Victoria Westlund (Turtle Lake, Wis./Turtle Lake HS) added seven kills.
Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) recorded 29 assists in the win.
Following Eau Claire's sweep of Northland in the second match of the evening, the Saints would take on the Blugolds in the nightcap.
With the opening set tied 21-21, the Saints would score three straight points with kills by
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) and Zyvoloski. CSS ultimately took the first set 25-22.
The Saints then had a 9-5 lead in the second set, but the Blugolds would chip away at the margin and eventually took control of the set following a 6-1 run. Eau Claire evened the match by taking the set 25-20.
The Blugolds also took the third set by the same 25-20 score and in the fourth set, Eau Claire held a 19-17 lead and would finish off the Saints by ending on a 6-1 run to take the set and the match 25-18.
Morrin was credited with a team-high 12 kills, while Birkeland recorded 24 assists.
Danielle Benusa (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) had a team leading 13 digs in the match. For the Blugolds, Amy Bomgren led the team with 17 kills.
CSS is now 9-9-0 overall and 4-1-0 in UMAC play. Northland falls to 6-14-0 overall, and 2-3 in the UMAC while the Blugolds are now 15-9-0 overall.
The Saints will travel to New Ulm, Minn. on Friday to take on Martin Luther College for their next action, game time is set for 7 p.m. They will then take on Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
