Volleyball Falls to Knights in Five

Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's volleyball team fell to Martin Luther College in five sets on Friday at the Reif Gymnasium.

The Saints would take the first set 25-22, due largely to a comeback of seven straight points after being down 16-10.  The Saints would continue to battle and go on a 7-2 run to finish out the set.

The second set would be tied up at 15 when the Knights would go on a 6-2 run, winning the set 25-20.

After being tied up in the middle of the third set, the Saints pulled away with a 6-1 run, taking the set 25-22.

In the fourth set, the lead changed hands nine times with CSS having a 22-19 lead late. Unfortunately, the Knights recorded five straight points and ultimately took the set 25-23.

In the fifth-and-deciding set, the score would be tied at 9 apiece when Martin Luther closed the set on a 6-2 run to take the match 15-11.

Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) led the Saints with 24 kills and 13 digs, while Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) chipped in 17 kills.  Gloria Ohaju (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS) added eight kills. Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) added 52 assists, and Taylor Tyllia (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) had five block assists in the loss.  Leah Nass led the Knights (15-11, 9-4 UMAC) with 17 kills.

Despite the loss, the Saints still clinched the No. 2 seed for next week's UMAC Tournament due to the University of Minnesota Morris falling to Northwestern College. If both CSS and Martin Luther win tomorrow they will face each other again in Duluth on Wednesday in the UMAC Tournament Semifinals.

The Saints (15-12, 10-3 UMAC) will close the regular season tomorrow afternoon against Bethany Lutheran College. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Reif Gymnasium. All of the action can be seen live on Saints Sports Net.
