Volleyball Sweeps ’Jills in Final Road Match

Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team took care of Northland College on Wednesday night, winning in straight sets to get to 10 wins in conference play.

The Saints trailed 8-4 early in the opening set, before going on a 5-0 run to take the lead. Then trailing 13-12, the Saints finished strong scoring 13 of the final 18 points to take the set 25-18.

CSS then dominated the second set, jumping out to a 14-4 lead and eventually winning 25-11. The Saints had a .524 hitting percentage in the second set. In the third set, the Saints led 5-1 and then closed the match on a 10-1 run to win 25-14.

No St. Scholastica player was in double-figures in kills as Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) led the way with eight. Taylor Tyllia (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) added seven kills each, while Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) chipped in six kills. Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had 22 set assists, while Jess Hanowski (Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) had 12 set assists. Alaina Donovan had five kills to lead the LumberJills.

With the loss, coupled with a Martin Luther College victory, Northland (9-19, 5-7 UMAC) has been eliminated from UMAC Tournament contention. The Saints just need to win once in their final two matches to clinch home court for the UMAC Tournament semifinals.

The Saints (15-11, 10-2 UMAC) will be at home to close out the regular season this weekend as they will host Martin Luther College on Friday night and Bethany Lutheran College Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale. All of the action will take place in Reif Gymnasium and can be seen live on Saints Sports Net. Friday's match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
