Box Score MORRIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) –
Shannon Carlson (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) scored in the 70th minute as the St. Scholastica women's soccer team defeated the University of Minnesota Morris 1-0 on Friday.
Both teams entered today with identical 9-1-0 conference marks, with the Cougars defeating the Saints earlier this season 1-0 and Cougars falling to Bethany Lutheran College 2-1. If you recall, Morris' victory over the Saints ended St. Scholastica's 99-game UMAC regular season unbeaten streak.
The first half did not see much action as both teams combined to get off only three shots and each goalkeeper making a save apiece. The Cougars (10-4-0, 9-2-0 UMAC) had the best scoring chance at the end of the first half as Rachel Berns hit the crossbar off of a corner.
The second half belonged to the Saints, however, controlling possession for the better part of the half and attempting nine shots, while holding the Cougars to no shots.
For the first time this season, the Saints finally hit the back of the net against the Cougars as in the 70th minute Carlson headed in a cross from
Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) to make it 1-0. It was the first goal allowed by Morris in the last seven games. CSS held firm from there to take the win 1-0.
The Saints now have a game lead on the Cougars with three games left to play this regular season.
Kelsey Reeves (Eagle River, Alaska/Eagle River HS ) made one save to earn her fourth shutout of the season. Rikki Beaver had five saves in the loss for the Cougars.
The Saints (12-4-1, 10-1-0 UMAC) will be at Crown College in St. Bonifacius tomorrow for another conference contest. Action is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
