Casey Mitchell (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and
Alexi Bopray (River Falls, Wis./River Falls HS) both scored and the Saints picked up an own goal off of a Northwestern College deflection as the St. Scholastica women's soccer team defeated the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) rival Eagles by a score of 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Saints received their first goal of the game in a strange fashion, as the ball was deflected off of a Northwestern defender past keeper Sarah Stenson to give CSS a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of the first half.
Shannon Carlson (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) hit the post on a shot in the 26th minute and CSS recorded eight shots in the first half, but the Saints remained up just 1-0 at the break.
The Saints would continue to apply the pressure in the second half, and found the back of the net in the minute as
Casey Mitchell (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) scored in the 50th minute, her 10th of the season.
Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) was credited with the assist. The goal gives the Saints three players with ten or more goals, which is the most of any UMAC team.
Northwestern would cut the Saints lead in half in the 63rd minute, as Sarah Scinto scored the Eagles lone goal of the contest off of an assist from Lyssa Hester. The goal came on Northwestern's second shot of the contest, as the Eagles mustered just three shots against a strong Saints defense. The game would remain 2-1 until the final seconds, as
Alexi Bopray (River Falls, Wis./River Falls HS) scored in the 89th minute to push the final score to 3-1.
Shannon Carlson (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) picked up the assist.
Kelsey Reeves (Eagle River, Alaska/Eagle River HS ) made one save for the Saints, who improve to 10-4-1 on the season and 9-1 in the UMAC. Sarah Stenson made 11 saves for the Eagles, who fall to 6–6 on the year and 2-3 in UMAC contests. This is the 13th time the Saints have held opponents to one goal or less this season.
The Saints will continue their six-game road trip on Tuesday as they to travel to face Augsburg College in the final non-conference matchup of the regular season. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
