For the second night in a row, the Saints men's hockey team gave up late goals in a losing effort to the Augsburg Auggies falling by the score 3-2 on Saturday night at the Rosemount Community Ice Arena.
The loss to the Auggies (5-8-0) was the second in as many days for the Saints as they have now started the 2012 year off with an 0-2 record.
The Saints got on the board first in tonight's game when
Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) scored on a power play with assists from
Brenden Bradbury (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Monticello HS/Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) and
Chad Golanowski (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) to give the Saints a one-nothing lead in the first. The goal was Malenstyn's first at the collegiate level. The score would remain the same for the next four minutes and the Saints took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Both goaltenders held strong throughout most of the second period as well. The lone goal was scored by Augsburg's Trevor Doden at the 13:13 mark on assists from David Hines and Thomas Paine to tie the game up at one. The game remained tied after two periods of play.
The third period was a defensive one for most of the way until the 17:07 point when John Lennartson scored a power play goal with an assist from Brandon Bukowski and Ben McClellan to give the Auggies their first lead of the game.
Augsburg extended that lead just 1:22 later when Doden notched his second goal of the night on an open net with assists from McClellan and Erik Ordahl to make it 3-1 in favor of the Auggies.
The Saints made a final push when
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) scored the third goal in two and a half minutes on assists from Bradbury once again as well as
Carter Davis (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Central Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) to cut the lead down to 3-2 with 28 seconds left.
The goal turned out to be too little too late for CSS and Augsburg went on to top the Saints by a final score of 3-2.
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 33 saves for CSS in as his record now falls to 4-5-2 on the season.
Nowakowski's goal was his seventh on the season and he remains in sixth on the team with 11 points. Davis' assist gives him 10 this season and ties him in fourth on the team with 14 total points. Golanowski now has seven assists and eight total points. Bradbury's assists give him six on the season and seven total points while Malenstyn's goal gives him six points on the season.
