The Saints men's hockey team fell to the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties in St. Peter on Friday night 3-2.

The Saints loss to the Gusties (8-4-2) gives them a loss to start the New Year for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

Gustavus started the scoring early in the game when Sam Blaisdell scored on assists from Alex Gallen and Mark Jackson to give the Gusties an early one-nothing lead.  Both goaltenders would hold strong the rest of the period to keep the score at 1-0 going into the first intermission.

The Gusties came out hot in the second just as they did in the first and it paid off when Nate Paulsen scored on an assist from Blake Schammel three and a half minutes in to give GAC a 2-0 lead.

St. Scholastica took advantage of a power play opportunity four minutes later when Jeremy Dawes (Winnipeg, Manitoba/College Jeanne Suave (Portage-MJHL) ) began the St. Scholastica comeback scoring on assists from Austin Brown (Lathrup Village, Mich./Legacy HS (Woodstock-MJAHL) ) and Carter Davis (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Central Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ).  The score remained at 2-1 when the clock hit zero for the second period.

CSS made it two unanswered early in the third when Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) scored on assists from Chad Golanowski (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) and Garet Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS (Jersey-EJHL) ) once again on a power play to tie the game up at two a piece.

Gustavus would have the last laugh with 1:49 to go in the game when Ross Ring-Jarvi scored a power play goal on assists from Ryan Johnson and Tim LaBombard to give the Gusties a 3-2 lead, a score that would remain until the final buzzer.

Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) took the loss for the Saints making 19 saves as his record falls to 4-4-2.

Dawes' goal gives him 17 points on the season as he is now alone in second on the team.  Brown's assist was his 11th on the season and is fourth on the team with 14 total points.  Davis is still right behind Brown as his assist gives him 13 points on the season.  Nowakowski now has 10 points on six goals and four assists and Golanowski now has seven points.  Chumley's assist gives him four total points.

The Saints (7-4-2) will be back in action again tomorrow night when they head to Rosemount, Minn. to take on the Augsburg Auggies (4-8-0) at 7:05 p.m.  The game can be heard live on GameCentral at csssaints.com.
