Adams' Ninth Leads Saints to Second in CCSA

Saints Claim Minnesota College Championship Team Title

Complete Results

LAKE ELMO, Minn. -- St. Scholastica sophomore Brooke Adams (Spooner, Wis./Spooner HS ) led the Saints on day two of the US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) SuperTour at Green Acres recreation area, finishing ninth in the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) NCAA qualifier field and 21st overall in the SuperTour field, over the 15km freestyle course, posting a time of 46:30.6.

The SuperTour race was a freestyle pursuit start in which the winner of Saturday's 5km classic started first, and all subsequent racers chased the winner by the margin behind they finished.  The CCSA race results were measured by elapsed time on course for the day.

After the Saints posted their best team performance of the year Saturday, in what turned out to be a dual with the Michigan Tech Huskies for the team title, the Huskies roared back Sunday to claim eight of the top ten spots, including sweeping the collegiate podium.  Deedra Irwin won in a time of 43:52.7, Alice Flanders took second in 43:54.0, and Lynn Duijndam completed the sweep in 43:58.1, to take a perfect team score on the day.

Saints senior Eleanor Magnuson (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS) finished 11th in the collegiate race and 23rd in the SuperTour field, while junior Christina Groulx (Thunder Bay, Ontario/St. Ignatius HS (Lakehead University)) rounded out the Saints scoring in 14th collegiately and 26th overall.  The Saints finished second as a team for the second day in a row to the Huskies.

The weekend's races also served as the 2012 Minnesota Collegiate Championships, in which the Saints soundly grabbed their third title in six seasons.

“We had such a good day yesterday and tried to carry that momentum into today's race, but Tech just had an awesome day as a team.  Our ladies tried to match them early in the race, but they just took it to us,” said Saints head coach Chad Salmela.  “Eleanor struggled a bit to find the tempo that put her in the top three yesterday and Brooke started slow, but had a good second half of the race to lead us, but Christina and Sarah Allen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Northern Michigan)) both stepped up big time with great, great races to keep the team competitive and take the Minnesota College Championship title.  It was a weekend in which we made a big step forward overall, and I'm very happy with the performances.”

The Saints have a week off of competition, resuming their competitive season February 11th and 12th with the CCSA Championships.  The Saints sit in fourth place going into the final two of three conference championship races.
