PREVIEW: Basketball Looks to Continue Home Winning Streaks

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's and women's basketball teams will be home again this weekend as they compete against Presentation College Friday and the University of Minnesota-Morris Saturday at Reif Gymnasium. Saturday will be Alumni Day with men's and women's alumni games taking place earlier in the day.

***Suits and Sneakers Awareness Weekend – Head Men's Basketball Coach David Staniger, Presentation Head Coach Jeremy Reigle and Minnesota-Morris Head Coach Paul Grove will take part in this event this weekend to promote cancer awareness. Men's Basketball

Last Action: 
The Saints won both of their games this past weekend by 20-plus points. On Friday they blew out Crown 96-64 behind four players scoring in double digits with Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) leading the way with 17. On Saturday UMAC preseason favorite Northwestern College came to town with Tester needing only 13 points to reach 1,000 career points and he did that with a team-high 19 in a 71-51 victory.

St. Scholastica Saints (7-9, 4-1 UMAC)
After starting the season 0-6, the Saints have won six out of their last seven games … The play of Chris Hamers (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) and Tester has been a big reason for the turnaround as they are averaging 18.1 and 14.1 points per game (ppg) respectively … Either Tester and Hamers has led the team in scoring in every game they have played this year … Tester also leads the way down low with 6.9 rebounds per game … Hamers leads the team in 3-point shooting as well shooting 39.6-percent from beyond the arc on 141 attempts and is seventh in the nation with 3.5, 3-pointers per game  …In the first five conference games of the year, the Saints lead the league with a .411, 3-point percentage, while also leading in 3-point percentage defense (.281) … Jonah Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) is tops on the team in the assist category averaging 3.9 per game and MarShaan Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis North HS (Minneapolis Comm. & Tech. College)) leads the team in blocks with 1.25/game … Derek Steve (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) is averaging four assists per game in conference play … The Saints are 6-2 in the Reif this year, having won their last six in the friendly confines … Over the last four games the Saints are averaging 73.5 points per game and giving up only 60.3 which are both better than their season average of 68.1 and 70.8 points, respectively.

Presentation Saints (6-9, 2-3 UMAC)
The Saints have opened up UMAC play with a 2-3 record and after three straight home games will now go on the road for five consecutive games in conference play … With a lot of driving to go, the Saints will look to start this streak off with a win in the Saints vs. Saints battle … The Saints are 6-3 at home, but are 0-4 away from Aberdeen, South Dakota … Darrell Farr is the best player on this Presentation team as he has led the team in scoring in nine games and led in rebounds in all but one game … Farr has 10 double-doubles on the year and is averaging one on the year with 16.1 points and 11.7 rebounds per game … Farr is ranked ninth in Division III in rebounds per game … Derek Hahn is the next closest scorer with points per game (8.4) … As a team the Saints are scoring 65.9 points per game and are giving up 78.2 points per game on defense … Presentation is the lowest scoring team in the conference, averaging just 60.4 points per game in league play.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Presentation: 17-12)
The battle of the Saints was split last season as both teams won on the others home court. CSS won a close one in Aberdeen 77-75. Presentation won by 15 points with a score of 73-58 in both teams' final game of the year at the Reif.

Minnesota-Morris Cougars (5-9, 3-2 UMAC)
The Cougars are tied for third place in the UMAC with a loss to Presentation in the conference opener and then a heartbreaking overtime loss at home to conference-leading Bethany Lutheran this past weekend  … Derek Schmidt and Brendon Foss are leading the team in scoring with 13.1 and 10.3 points per game, respectively … The Cougars have three players averaging five plus rebounds per game and are outrebounding their opponents 33.4-30.8 … Brodie Raymond is shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc … The Cougars are scoring 66.6 points per game, while giving up 72.9 points per game on defense.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Minnesota-Morris: 11-16)
Morris won both games last year by a combined total of eight points. The Cougars eliminated the Saints from UMAC tournament contention with their 76-73 win in the Reif.


Women's Basketball

Last Action:
The Saints won both games this past weekend by scoring over 80 points and holding their opponents under 40 points. Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) led the way with 37 points combined and was 15-for-25 from the floor.

St. Scholastica Saints (5-11, 3-2 UMAC)
After losing two in a row on the road, the Saints bounced back big this past weekend with two blowout wins to bring their UMAC record to 3-2 … Hovick has come on as of late and is averaging 14.3 points per game over the team's last four contests ... Hovick and Kayla Heisler (Remer, Minn./Northland HS) are leading the way in scoring as the only two Saints averaging double figures with 11.4 and 10.5 per game, respectively … Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) had a big weekend as well for the Saints as she scored 29 points and brought down 11 rebounds combined in the two games to bring up her season average up to7.8 points and 4.2 rebounds … The Saints are 4-1 at the Reif this year, including four straight … This past weekend's scoring dominance brought their season output to 63.7 points per game, while giving up close to that at 66.2 points per game … CSS is ranked 35th in Division III, averaging 12.8 steals per game.

Presentation Saints (2-12, 1-4 UMAC)
The Saints opened up the season on a nine-game losing streak, but have since bounced back with a 2-3 record over the last five to pick up a few wins, including a 82-55 UMAC win over Crown on the road … Despite the record the Saints have three players scoring double digits with Hannah Phillips leading the way with 15.5 points per game and 19.8 per game in conference play, which leads the league … Phillips was named this week's UMAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week and is only one of seven Division III players to record a triple-double this season when she had 37 points, 10 rebounds and 12 steals vs. Trinity Bible … Rachel Fuhrmann and Kelli Boekelheide are chipping in with 12.8 and 11.6 points, respectively… Chelsea Voorhees is having a solid year with 8.4 points per game to go along with 7.2 rebounds per contest as well ... The Saints are scoring only 46.9 points per game, while giving up 74 points per game on defense.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. PC: 16-9)
St. Scholastica won both games last year by a total of seven points.

Minnesota-Morris Cougars (7-7, 4-1 UMAC)
After going undefeated in the UMAC last year, Morris suffered their first conference loss in 29 games with a 75-73 loss at home to UMAC leader Martin Luther this past weekend …Six of the Cougars next seven games are on the road where they are 3-4 on the year … Emily Mehr is leading a trio of Cougars scoring in double figures with 14.6 points per game ... Kendra Wycoff and Jenni Noordmans are close behind with 11.6 and 10.1 per game … Abby Fragodt is averaging 6.8 rebounds per game for Morris who is averaging 37.4 boards per game … Kelsey Erickson has picked up where last year's NCAA leader in assist-to-turnover ratio leader, UMAC Tournament and Honorable Mention All-American Steph Roggenbuck left off and she is averaging 3.8 assists per game … Morris is one of the few UMAC teams that is averaging more points scored on offense than given up on defense with 68.6 on offense and 66.6 on defense … Both CSS and the Cougars are first and second, respectively in the conference in turnover margin.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. Minnesota-Morris: 3-16)
The Saints were swept last year, but played the Cougars close and lost by less than 10 in both games to the eventual UMAC champions.
