MINNEAPOLIS – The 25th-ranked St. Scholastica volleyball team took part in the 30th annual Augsburg Volleyball Invitational on Friday and ended a pair of losing streaks to the College of Saint Benedict and University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
In the first match, the Saints defeated Saint Benedict 25-19, 16-25, 27-25, 25-19. The victory snapped a four-match losing streak against the Blazers as the Saints last defeated St. Ben's during the 2003 season.
Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) had her first 20-20 match of her career with a team-high 21 kills and 21 digs.
Paige Hardy (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) also had a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs.
Sarah Kurtovich (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) had 38 assists and
Nikki Hughes (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern HS) added 18 digs.
In the second match, the Saints avenged a loss earlier this week against the UW-Eau Claire by winning a five-set thriller over the Blugolds 25-19, 25-20, 18-25, 19-25, 15-7. The victory snaps a 19-match losing streak against the Blugolds and it is the first time head coach
Dana Moore has beaten UWEC.
Hardy led the Saints with 21 kills, while Zyvoloski had 18 kills and once again had a team-high with 29 digs. Hughes was one behind with 28 digs. Kurtovich served up 52 assists and
Megan Windschitl (Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS) had four block assists. It was just the second time Kurtovich went over 50 assists in a match in her career.
The Saints will face Gustavus Adolphus at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. The Gusties went 1-1 on day one, sweeping the Blugolds, but falling to St. Ben's. The Saints will also play again in the afternoon against an opponent that will be determined.
