PREVIEW: Volleyball Heads to Eau Claire on Tuesday for a Pair of Matches

DULUTH, Minn. – Coming off a 5-1 weekend, which saw the St. Scholastica volleyball team defeat two NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago, the Saints will travel to Eau Claire on Tuesday night to face another NCAA Tournament team, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and also Bethel University.

The Saints went 5-1 in the first three days of the season with the lone loss coming to 10th-ranked University of St. Thomas in four sets. The Saints swept No. 16 St. Olaf College on the opening day of the year and then swept Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday. Both were NCAA Tournament teams a year ago.

St. Scholastica Saints (5-1)
In 2010, the Saints won 20 of their 28 matches in a sweep. To start this season, CSS has already had four sweeps in their five victories … Junior Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) has led the Saints in the first six matches of the season with 79 kills, averaging 3.76 kills/set and is tied with Nikki Hughes (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern HS) with 73 digs … The Saints have utilized the 6-2 formation this season and junior Sarah Kurtovich (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) has been consistent as usual from the setter position with 122 assists. However, freshman Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) has also stepped up and has recorded 86 assists (5.38 assists/set) … Both sophomore Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) and junior Megan Windschitl (Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS) are tied for the team lead with 12 total blocks.

Bethel Royals (3-1)
The Royals got off to a good start this season, defeating Wisconsin Lutheran, University of Wisconsin-River Falls and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the Northwestern College opener on Thursday and Friday … The Royals' lone loss came to Northwestern College in three sets … Bethel was picked to finish sixth in the preseason Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) coaches' poll … The Royals placed eighth in the league in 2010 … Bethel is led by Nicole Wriedt, who is a two-time All-MIAC selection.

#20 UW-Eau Claire Blugolds (1-3)
The Blugolds made their sixth straight NCAA Regional Tournament appearance last season and opened 20th in the AVCA preseason poll … That ranking is expected to change however, Tuesday afternoon, as the Blugolds dropped three of their four matches over the weekend … UW-Eau Claire lost six players from last year's squad, including three all-conference picks … Leading the returnees is senior Liz Amici, who was a first team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) choice in 2010 … Senior Emily Zupon is also returns after missing most of last season due to injury … She was an honorable mention selection in 2009 … UWEC was picked to finish third in the WIAC preseason coaches' poll.

The Blugolds defeated the Saints in three sets at Reif Gymnasium last October. Paige Hardy (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) had 11 kills in the loss. The Saints have lost 18 straight matches against UWEC.
