NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team defeated both Hamline University and Macalester College in three sets on Friday afternoon to cap the St. Olaf Invitational with a record of 4-0.
The Saints (4-0), who swept in 20 of their 28 victories last season, won three of the four matches to open this season by way of the sweep.
In the first match of the day, the Saints defeated Hamline 25-21, 25-14, 25-22.
In set one, the score was tied 18-18 until the Saints went on a 6-1 run to take control and ultimately the set. The Saints had a .345 hitting percentage in the second set to win going away. The third set was fairly close throughout, but the Saints kept the Pipers (1-2) at bay and closed out the match in three.
Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) paced the Saints with 11 kills and 13 digs.
Paige Hardy (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS),
Taylor Tyllia (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), and
Kayla Horbacz (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) all had six kills.
Sarah Kurtovich (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) had 19 set assists and freshman
Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) added 17 assists.
In the final match for the Saints at the invite, CSS swept Macalester 25-14, 26-24, 25-11. Zyvoloski led the Saints with 13 kills. Hardy had nine kills and Tyllia added seven kills. Birkeland led the Saints with 21 assists, while Kurtovich was one behind with 20 assists. The loss dropped the Scots to 0-3.
The Saints will move to another invitational tomorrow when they take part in the Saint Mary's University Ground Round Sugar Loaf Classic. CSS will face two NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago in Nebraska Wesleyan University and 10th-ranked University of St. Thomas. The Saints' first match against Wesleyan begins at noon.
