Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored the lone goal in the St. Scholastica women's soccer team's 1-0 win over Martin Luther College on Friday afternoon at Saints Field.
This was St. Scholastica's first home Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) game (2nd overall), and the first conference game for the Knights (2-2-0, 0-1-0 UMAC).
The first half tempo was controlled by St. Scholastica, as they controlled the ball for all but a few minutes. Despite out shooting the Knights 8-0 in the first half, the Saints couldn't put one on the board, and the two teams went into halftime deadlocked at zero.
The teams came out in the second half and it was the Saints in control once again. Kehtel finally broke the tie in the 58th minute when she put in the deciding goal from in front of the net with assists from
Andrea Beatt (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and
Logan Williamson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS).
That goal was all the Saints would need to close out the game as they held Martin Luther without a shot, outshooting the Knights 29-0 in the game.
Molly Bergmann (Walker, Minn./Walker-Hackensack-Akeley HS) made no saves on the night, but earned the win and shutout nonetheless, improving her record on the season to 2-1-0. Allison Snyder was the losing goalkeeper on record, making 11 saves but letting one go by to fall to 2-2-0 on the season.
The Saints (3-4-0, 2-0-0 UMAC) will return to action Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they face off with Bethany Lutheran College (4-2-0, 1-0-0 UMAC) at Saints Field.
