ASHLAND, Wis. – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team extended its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season unbeaten streak to 86 games with a 6-0 victory over Northland College in the conference opener on Tuesday.
Freshman
Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) led the Saints with two goals on the day to extend her season total to three. Kehtel scored in the 56th minute thanks to an assist from
Andrea Beatt (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and then in the 62nd minute with assists from
Casey Mitchell (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and
Kallie Thomas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS).
Beatt got the scoring started in the 19th minute with an unassisted goal, her third of the season. That was the lone goal of the first half, even though the Saints out shot the LumberJills 19-1 in the half.
The Saints turned things on in the second half. Just 56 seconds after Kehtel's first goal,
Taylor Cunningham (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) scored her first of the season, thanks to an assist from Mitchell.
Shannon Carlson (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) netted her first goal of the season in the 73rd minute with an assist from
Kaylee Gombold (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS). Less than two minutes later, Gombold scored her second on the year to make the final score 6-0. Carlson and
Danni Firkus (Hugo, Minn./Forest Lake HS) had the assists.
CSS out shot the 'Jills 41-4 in the contest.
Bailey Mahlum (Bismarck, N.D./Bismarck HS) earned her first win of the season, making three saves. Jessica Jaeckel had 16 saves in the loss. The Saints have won 24 straight over the 'Jills (1-3-0, 0-1-0 UMAC).
The Saints (2-4-0, 1-0-0 UMAC) will be home this weekend in UMAC play against Martin Luther College on Friday and Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday. The Martin Luther contest will begin at approximately 4 p.m. on Friday. All of the action can be seen live on GameCentral at csssaints.com.
