MOORHEAD, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team was tied with 17th-ranked Concordia College-Moorhead at the half, but two early second half goals were enough to propel the Cobbers to the 3-2 victory on Saturday at the Cobber Classic.
It was all Cobbers in the first half, outshooting the Saints 14-1, but just put five on net. One of those shots got past CSS goalkeeper
Bailey Mahlum (Bismarck, N.D./Bismarck HS) in the 15th minute on a Sarah Rounds goal.
The Saints got one shot off in the first half and made it count as
Kaylee Gombold (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) scored her first of the season two minutes and five second later to tie it at 1-1 at the half.
Concordia came out strong in the second half with a pair of Laura Prosinski goals in the first 10 minutes of play to make it 3-1 Cobbers. Prosinski also had an assist on the Rounds goal.
The Saints cut the lead to one in the 68th minutes on a corner kick, as
Kallie Thomas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), who took the corner, got it in the net for her first collegiate goal to make it 3-2.
Andrea Beatt (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) would put a shot on net with less than three minutes to go and the Saints attempted a couple of more shots in the final minutes, but none on target as the 17th-ranked Cobbers prevailed 3-2.
Bailey Mahlum (Bismarck, N.D./Bismarck HS) made 10 saves in the loss for the Saints. Ali Nelson made just one save to earn the victory for the Cobbers. Concordia had a 26-7 shots advantage and a 9-3 corners edge. The Cobbers improve to 3-0-1. The Saints fall to 1-3-0, but in the three losses, one was in overtime at Macalester and the other two were against top 20 nationally-ranked teams and CSS was tied at the half with both squads.
The Saints will square off against St. Olaf College tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the Cobber Classic.
