ST. PAUL – In sweltering heat in the Twin Cities, Macalester College scored with 2:25 left in the first overtime to defeat the St. Scholastica women's soccer team 1-0 Thursday evening in the season opener for both teams.
This was the second straight season both teams squared off in the season opener with the Scots scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes to defeat the Saints in Duluth a year ago today. The Saints fall to 1-7 against the Scots all-time, being shutout in all seven defeats.
In 90-degree temperatures, Macalester controlled possession for the better part of the game, but the Saints also had some very good scoring chances. Due to the heat officials granted breaks in the both halves for the players to get water. CSS goalkeeper
Bailey Mahlum (Bismarck, N.D./Bismarck HS) played well, stopping nine shots in the first half.
The Scots continued to control action in the second half, with the Saints not getting a quality shot at the net. Mahlum made two saves in the second half.
Finally, in the first overtime, Macalester's Kat Lenhart put in a header off a corner from Izzi Speer with 2:25 left to give the Scots the 1-0 victory.
Macalester out-shot the Saints 25-4 in the contest and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Mahlum made a career-high 12 saves in the loss for the Saints. Rosie Glenn-Finer had one save in the win for the Scots.
The Saints will have their home opener this weekend when they host the 2011 Advantage Emblem Cup on Saints Field. Saturday the Saints will open action by facing the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at noon. All of the action can be seen live on GameCentral at csssaints.com.
