GREEN BAY, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team rallied to tie second-ranked St. Norbert College in the third period, but the Green Knights gained the lead back in the final nine minutes to win 5-3 on Saturday night.
The Saints struck first against the Green Knights midway through the first period when #Nate Taurence# scored his third goal of the season. #Brandon Nowakowski# and Nate's twin brother #Nick Taurence# had the assists.
St. Norbert tied the game at 1-1 after a Brandon Hoogenboom score with less than three minutes to play and that was the score at the first intermission. St. Norbert had an 18-7 shot advantage in the opening period.
The Green Knights took the lead seven minutes into the second period when Derek Donohue scored to make it 2-1. It was 3-1 Green Knights after a short-handed goal by Kyle Stroh with less than seven minutes left in the second period.
The score remained 3-1 until seven minutes into the third period when the Saints cut it to one as #Paul Marcoux# scored his sixth goal of the season. #Stephane Phaneuf# and #Kyle Cowan# had the assists. Just 12 seconds later, Cowan netted his first of the season to tie the score at 3-3. Phaneuf and Marcoux had the assists.
However, St. Norbert re-took the lead with eight minutes to go with a goal by Brandon Longley. The Green Knights then added an empty-netter to make the final 5-3.
The Saints were out-shot 38-25 in the contest. #Brennan Poderzay# stopped 33 shots in the loss, while B.J. O'Brien was one of three goaltenders to see action for St. Norbert and he earned the win, stopping 12 shots in 33 minutes of action. After last night's penalty-plagued game for the Saints, both teams committed just three infractions each tonight.
