Penalties Pain Saints in NCHA Showdown

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – In a game featuring 44 penalties for 115 minutes, the St. Scholastica men's hockey team fell to its Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) rivals from the University of Wis.-Stevens Point on Friday night by a 3-1 final.

The Saints fall to 9-12-1 on the year with the loss, including a 4-11-0 conference mark, while the Pointers improve to 11-11-0 (7-8-0 NCHA).

CSS out-shot the Pointers 11-4 in the first period but couldn't make anything of it. In the second, Stevens Point turned the tables and out-shot CSS 16-10.

The officials called 22 penalties in the second period, but just two resulted in powerplays – both for Wis.-Stevens Point. The Pointers made good on both opportunities, first with a goal by Jon Bockmann at the 9:00 mark, and then in the closing seconds of the period with a Kyle Heck score.

Things did not cool down in the third as 18 more penalties were called, this time resulting in five powerplays.

Stevens Point pulled ahead by three at the 5:49 mark of the third with Donnie Hallmark netting the score. CSS came back with a score just 90 seconds later as #Jeremy Dawes# netted his eighth of the year with an assist from #Daman Milsom#.

In total, St. Scholastica took 20 penalties for 51 minutes while the Pointers took 24 penalties for 64 minutes. CSS was held scoreless in four powerplay opportunities, while Stevens Point made good on two of their four chances.

#Brennan Poderzay# took the tough loss for the Saints, making 25 saves on 28 chances. Stevens Point goaltender Kyle Graves also made 25 stops against CSS.

The Saints will head to De Pere, Wis. to face the second-ranked St. Norbert College Green Knights at 7 p.m. tomorrow night. The game can be heard live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC with Steve Jezierski on the call.
