Saints Snap St. Norbert’s Home Unbeaten Streak

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The last team to defeat defending national champion St. Norbert College at the Cornerstone Community Center was also the team to end the Green Knights' 27-game home unbeaten streak on Friday night as the St. Scholastica men's hockey team was victorious by a score of 3-2.

Tonight's win against the fifth-ranked Green Knights marks the sixth straight season the Saints have defeated team ranked fifth or better nationally. The last loss at home by St. Norbert was on December 4,, 2009 when Jordan Chong scored a short-handed overtime goal to lift CSS past the Knights.

The first period would go scoreless as the Saints committed three penalties within the first eight minutes, but managed to kill them all off. Due to the fact that the Saints were on the penalty kill three times, St. Norbert owned the edge in shots 16-4 in the period.

The Green Knights finally broke through seven and a half minutes into second period on a Chris Rial goal. CSS evened up the score with seven minutes left in the period as Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) scored his team-best 10th goal of the season. Brenden Bradbury (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Monticello HS/Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) had the assist.

With less than four minutes left in the period, Johan Ryd put St. Norbert back in front. But once again it was the Saints responding as Joel Langevin (Nanaimo, British Columbia/Penticton Secondary (Fort William-SIJHL) ) added his first tally of the season to make it 2-2 at the second intermission. Ryne Bodger (Duncan, British Columbia/Cowichan Secondary (Merritt-BCHL) ) and Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) assisted on the goal.

The Green Knights would be held in check for the most part in the third period and the Saints were able to get in front for the first time on the night at Jeremy Dawes (Winnipeg, Manitoba/College Jeanne Suave (Portage-MJHL) ) scored with less than 12 minutes to go to make it 3-2. Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) and Austin Brown (Lathrup Village, Mich./Legacy HS (Woodstock-MJAHL) ) had the assists. Dawes has now scored a goal in five straight games. The CSS defense and goaltender Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) held it from there as the Saints prevailed 3-2.

Rundell made 33 saves for his fourth win of the season, while David Jacobson had 16 saves in the loss for the Green Knights. St. Norbert (6-3-3, 3-3-1 NCHA) out-shot St. Scholastica 35-19. Both teams went a combined for 0-for-7 on the power-play.

The Saints, who are now unbeaten in their last six games, move into a tie for second place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) and are just two points behind first-place University of Wisconsin-River Falls, who suffered their first defeat of the season tonight to UW-Eau Claire.

The Saints (7-2-2, 3-2-2 NCHA) will play their final game of the 2011 calendar year tomorrow when the Green Knights and Saints wrap-up their series at 4 p.m. at the Cornerstone Community Center.
