Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team used the hot hand of
Chris Hamers (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) to win part two of the border battle against UW-Superior Saturday night at the Reif Gymnasium. The Saints would win in impressive fashion, beating their Twin Ports rival by a score of 85-71.
The teams opened up the game with the Saints taking the early lead. Both squads battled basket for basket until the 'Jackets took a five point lead with 6:49 left in the first half. The Saints would battle back and take a 32-31 lead into halftime.
It was a tale of two halves as the Saints opened up the second half with a 22-5 run to extend its lead by 19 points.
Chris Hamers (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) was a large factor in this run by Saints, scoring five 3-pointers in a row. The Saints would shoot 68-percent in the second half including 11 3-pointers made.
The 'Jackets could only muster a 8-0 run in the final minutes of the game and the Saints were able close out the 2011 campaign with a win by a score of 85-71.
For the Saints, Hamers led all scorers with 28 points and shot an astounding 8-for-12 from beyond the arc.
Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) added 15 points
and seven rebounds.
Derek Steve (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) chipped in 11 points while Marshaan Johnson and
Jonah Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) each added in ten points apiece.
UW-Superior (8-5) had two scorers with 14 points to lead the team. The 'Jackets shot 46-percent from the field and 81-percent from the charity stripe.
The Saints shot 52-percent from the field, 64-percent (14-22) from beyond the arc, and 65-percent from the charity stripe.
The Saints (2-8) will host North Central University (Minn.) on January 6
th at the Reif Gymnasium. That game can be viewed on Game Central with tip-time scheduled for 7:30 p.m. local time.
