Second Half Run Enough to Lead Gorloks Past Saints

| By:
Box Score ST. LOUIS – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team held a one-point halftime lead and was ahead for the first eight minutes of the second half until Webster University (Mo.) went ahead for good and used a 12-1 run to pull away and win 71-58 on Friday evening at Grant Gymnasium.

The Gorloks scored the first six points of the game and led for most of the first half until Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) converted a 3-point-play the old-fashion way as time expired to give St. Scholastica a 33-32 halftime lead.

The Saints shot 55-percent in the first half, while holding Webster to 41-percent shooting. What hurt CSS in the first half was free throw shooting as it made only 60-percent (9-of-15). The Saints would finish at 60-percent for the game.

St. Scholastica kept momentum going in the second half as Kayla Heisler (Remer, Minn./Northland HS) made a 3-pointer to put the Saints up by four. CSS held the lead until Webster took it back with 12:15 left in the game.

With the Gorloks leading by one with nine minutes remaining, Webster went on a 12-1 run and led by a score of 63-51 with five minutes left. The Saints would not threaten in the final five minutes as the Gorloks went on to win 71-58.

The Saints went cold in the second half, making 26-percent of their shots to finish at 37-percent for the game. Webster shot 44-percent in the second half to finish at 42-percent for the game. The Saints were also outrebounded 43-32.

Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) led the Saints with 12 points. She also had three assists and three steals before falling out. Heisler and Frase each added 11 points. Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) and Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) had five rebounds apiece to lead the team. Maggie Zehner had 12 points to lead the Gorloks.

The Saints will face another school from St. Louis tomorrow afternoon in Fontbonne University. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
