IRONWOOD, Mich. -- Despite fighting off a cold most of the last week, sophomore
Brooke Adams (Spooner, Wis./Spooner HS ) found the strength to lead the St. Scholastica women skiers with strong 23rd place overall finish at the Grandview XC Challenge 5km freestyle.
Adams' time of 14:59.1, was good enough for 15th among college skiers.The event was won by Elizabeth Simak, of Hayward, Wis., in a time of 13:33.4. Carolyn Ocariz of Team CXC was second in 13:41.4, while Monica Markvardsen of Northen Michigan University finished third overall and as the top collegiate skier, in a time 13:55.7.

Liz Peterson (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS), debuted as a Saint in 37th overall in a time of 15:32.8, 19th in the college ranks. Rounding out the team's top three skiers was senior
Eleanor Magnuson (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS) in 41st overall with a time of 15:36.0, placing 21st in the college standings.
"It was a solid start to the women's season," said Saints head coach
Chad Salmela. "I think everyone has really sound fitness, but we aren't in our best 5km race fitness yet, so the results are one thing at the moment, and what we need to do over the next month to pull even by January is clear. I feel good with where we are."
The Saints continue in Ironwood on Sunday with a 10km classic race.
