Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) scored his first two collegiate goals to lift the CSS men's hockey team over the Saint Mary's University Cardinals 4-2 at Mars Lakeview Arena on Friday night.

The non-conference win over the Cardinals (0-3-0) gives the Saints their first win after a loss and a tie to conference foe University of Wisconsin-Superior last weekend.

The Saints were hurt by early penalties to Stephane Phaneuf (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Paul’s HS (Winnipeg South-MJHL) ) and Matt Malenstyn (Surrey, British Columbia/Tamanawis Secondary (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ).  Saint Mary's capitalized on a five-on-three opportunity when Nick Gorup put the Cardinals ahead 1-0 three minutes into the game.

The Saints would answer seven minutes later on a power-play of their own when Austin Brown (Lathrup Village, Mich./Legacy HS (Woodstock-MJAHL) ) scored on assists from Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) and Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) to even things up at one.

CSS went on to take the lead early in the second period when Nowakowski put in his first collegiate goal on a breakaway assisted by Phaneuf and Dave Williams (Okotoks, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ).

The Saints would hold the lead from that point on and extend it when Nowakowski put in his second goal of the night; a power-play goal on a redirection shot from Chad Golanowski (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) and Malenstyn to make it 3-1 Saints.

The Cardinals would look for a comeback when Danny Wood put in a short-handed goal to cut the lead down to 3-2 in the middle of the second.

The Saints would find the net one more time before the second period was up when Corcoran scored on a Miller assist to give CSS a 4-2 lead.

Neither team would score in the third period and the score remained 4-2 to give the Saints their first victory of the season.

Jojo Jeanetta (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS ) earned a victory in his first collegiate start in goal for the Saints making 20 saves in the winning effort.

Corcoran and Miller are now tied for the team lead in points with five a piece.  Brown's goal gives him four points, Golanowski's assist gives him three, Nowakowski now has two with his goals, and Malenstyn, Phaneuf and Williams now all have a point with their assists vs. the Cardinals.

The Saints (1-1-1, 0-1-1 NCHA) will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for an early game against the St. Olaf Oles (2-0-1) at Mars Lakeview Arena with the puck drop at 4:00 p.m.  The action can be heard live on GameCentral at csssaints.com.
