The Saints women's soccer team gave up their first goal in UMAC play this year, but came from behind to beat the Northwestern College Eagles 2-1 at Griggs Field on the campus of Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday.
With the victory over the Eagles (11-6-1, 8-3-1 UMAC) the Saints sweep the regular season series after downing them 5-0 earlier this season.
The first half started off a little slow until the 17th minute when Northwestern's Sara Kallhoff put one in the back of the net on an assist from Rebekah Kirby to put the Eagles ahead 1-0 and end the Saints conference shutout streak.
The Saints would answer right back three and a half minutes later when
Taylor Cunningham (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) scored on an assist from
Kelsey Kehtel (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) to tie the game up at one. The defenses would hold strong for both teams and the score remained tied going into the half.
The second half started with a bang when Cunningham put one in net again just eight and a half minutes in on an assist from
Andrea Beatt (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) giving the Saints a 2-1 advantage.
Molly Bergmann (Walker, Minn./Walker-Hackensack-Akeley HS) only needed to make one save in the second half as the Eagles were held to only one shot, and the Saints would go on to victory 2-1 over Northwestern.
Cunningham's two goals gives her seven on the season and moves her into third on the team with 16 points. Kehtel and Beatt each increased their point total by one giving them a team leading 36 and 20 respectively.
Bergmann improved her record to 8-1-0 on the season and perfect in conference play with a 7-0-0 UMAC record.
The Saints (14-4-1, 11-0-1 UMAC) will be in action again on Tuesday when they host the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings (8-7-3, 4-5-3 UMAC) in the semi-final round of the UMAC Tournament at 11:30. The action can be seen live on GameCentral at csssaints.com.
