DULUTH, Minn.. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team opened the second half of the 2010-11 season with a 3-2 home victory over the Bethel University Royals at Mars Lakeview Arena on Friday night.
Junior #Carter Davis# scored two goals, including the opening score and the eventual game-winner to lead the Saints to an even 7-7-0 on the season. Bethel falls to 3-9-2 on the season with the loss.
Davis' first tally of the night came at about the halfway mark of the first with assists from #Alex Valenti# and #Stephane Phaneuf#.
#Joel Langevin# followed it up just two minutes later with his first score of the year, assisted by #Paul Marcoux# and #Neil Sauter#.
Bethel pulled within one with less than a minute remaining in the period as Chris Fiala scored his third of the season with an assist from Jake Calleja.
The 2-1 score held through the second period as the two teams were nearly even on shots in the second, with CSS taking a slight 6-5 advantage after out-shooting the Royals 16-7 in the first period.
Davis pulled the Saints ahead by two at the 6:09 mark of the third with a powerplay tally, his seventh of the season. #Brett Corcoran# had the assist.
Just 11 seconds later, Jack Paul pulled Bethel back within one with an assist from Christian Fogert, but #Patrick Sullivan# and the Saints defense were able to hold the Royals off for the remainder of the period.
Sullivan finished the night with 22 saves in picking up his fifth win of the season, bringing his own record back to an even 5-5-0 on the year. Michael Sperl took the loss for the Royals while making 29 saves.
The Saints will be back in action tomorrow night at Mars Lakeview Arena but will play host to the No. 10-ranked Hamline University Pipers. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m. and the action can be heard on the air on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC or online at csssaints.com.
