PREVIEW: Men’s Hockey to Face-Off Against Two MIAC Opponents

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team will host two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponents this weekend as Bethel University and No. 10 Hamline University come into Duluth to play the Saints at Mars Lakeview Arena

The Saints split a weekend series with Bridge Battle opponent and USCHO.com No. 15 ranked UW-Superior to end the first half of the season back in December. For the second week in a row the Saints upset a top 15-ranked team as they defeated the Yellowjackets 3-1 on Friday December 10th. The Yellowjackets would prove why they are ranked as they defeated the Saints 7-3 the next night. #Alex Valenti# scored two goals in the series. #Patrick Sullivan# went 1-1 on the weekend and had 54 saves in the two games combined.

The Saints will be playing their first games in over three weeks and their first in 2011 … These will be the last two non-conference games for the Saints as they will be in NCHA play for the rest of the season … The Saints are 4-1-0 in non-conference games this season, including 2-0 against the MIAC … #Riley Riddell#, #Carter Davis# and #Jeremy Dawes# are tied for the team lead with five goals. Riddell has the NCHA lead in assists with 12 and points with 17. Carter Davis (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Central Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) has six assists to give him 11 points and ninth in the conference … In just seven games played due to injury, Dawes has five goals and four assists to give him nine points … Patrick Sullivan (Kelowna, British Columbia/Chase Secondary (Fort William-SIJHL) ) has played the majority of the minutes in the net for the Saints this year and has a goals against average of 3.51.

Bethel Royals (3-8-2, 2-2-2 MIAC)
The Royals concluded the 2010 part of the season with a series split with Northland College (Wis.) where 24 goals were scored in the two games … The Royals won the Saturday night edition 10-1 … It was Bethel's first victory in five games … Jack Paul has 12 goals and seven assists on the year for 19 points on the year to give him first in the MIAC for goals and second in the MIAC for points … Jake Calleja and Jon Crouse lead the team in assists with 12 and 11 respectively … Zac Bush is the team's primary goaltender with over 600 minutes logged between the pipes so far this year … Bush has a goals against average of 3.76.

The Saints defeated the Royals 5-1 last season at University Arena. Five different Saints scored in the contest.

No. 10 Hamline Pipers (7-3-1, 3-0-1 MIAC)
The Pipers opened up their 2011 part of the season by defeating No.9 Milwaukee School of Engineering 4-1 on New Year's Day … Hamline has played four different ranked teams this season, going 2-2 in those contests … One of those wins came against St. Norbert College in November … Brian Arrigoni is the team's leading scorer with seven goals … Arrigoni also has five assists to give him twelve points on the year … Danny Vranek has five goals and seven assists to give him a tie for the team lead with twelve points as well … Beau Christian and Matt Hemingway are splitting time in net for the Pipers … The tandem is combining for a 2.62 goals against average … As a team the Pipers are scoring 3.07 goals per game.
