DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team held a 3-1 lead going into the second period, but ended up losing 5-3 to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Saints (8-9-1, 3-8-0 NCHA) came out strong in the opening period, putting three goals on the board. #Carter Davis# gathered the puck after it deflected off a defender and beat the Eau Claire goaltender seven minutes into the game to make it 1-0. Just one minute and one second later, #Tyler Miller# netted his fifth of the season to make it 2-0. #Eric Kraft# and #Joel Langevin# each assisted the goal.
After the Blugolds' Tyler Jundt scored on the power-play with eight minutes left in the period, CSS's #Nate Taurence# answered with a power-play goal of his own with 1:45 on the clock with a slap shot from the point to make it 3-1 at the first intermission.
The second period belonged to the Blugolds (11-7-0, 5-6-0 NCHA), scoring three goals in the period, two of which on the power-play. Jordan Slinger scored the first goal with the man advantage two minutes and 33 seconds into the period to make the score 3-2. Andrew McCabe then scored on a nifty play to make it 3-3. Slinger then added his second power-play goal of the period to make it 4-3 at the second intermission.
In the third period, Jordan Slinger gave the Blugolds insurance by picking up the hat trick with 1:57 to go in the game to make the final score 5-3.
#Patrick Sullivan# received the loss for the Saints, stopping 18 shots in 35 minutes of action. #Brennan Poderzay# played the rest of the game for the Saints and stopped 13 shots. Scott Pederson had 25 saves to pick up the win for Eau Claire. The Blugolds were 3-for-4 on the power-play, while the Saints were 1-for-7.
