DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team fell for the third straight game Sunday as Gustavus Adolphus clinched the 2010 Advantage Emblem Cup championship with a 1-0 victory on Saints Field.
The Saints' tough luck continued on Sunday as starting goalkeeper #Molly Bergmann# (Jr.-Walker, Minn.) and the Saints defense kept Gustavus off the board for 82 minutes before allowing a goal. Bergmann made seven saves in her first start of the season.
CSS took six shots on Gustavus goalkeeper Chelsea Bayer, who stopped all six in preserving the shutout. #Kaylee Gombold# (So.-Stillwater, Minn.) and #Andrea Beatt# (So.-Maple Grove, Minn.) each had two shots on net, while the Saints' best shot of the game came off the foot of #Shannon Carlson# (Fr.-Woodbury, Minn.) with just under two minutes remaining, as she missed the corner of the net by mere feet.
Meghan McMillan broke through for the Gusties, scoring with just under 8 minutes remaining on the clock with an assist from Meghan Faricy. The goal and the shutout helped to clinch the 2010 Advantage Emblem Cup championship for Gustavus, who, with 18 points, edged Concordia-Moorhead on the third tiebreaker possibility.
Two Saints were named to the Cup's All-Tournament team: Beatt, who scored the team's lone goal of the tournament, and goalkeeper #Bailey Mahlum# (Jr.-Bismarck, N.D.), who played strong in the Saints' loss to Concordia on Friday afternoon. Gustavus sent three players to the all tournament team in McMillan, Mackenzie Del Santro, and Ashley Anderson. Concordia-Moorhead's Sam Johnson was named All-Tournament MVP with three goals on the weekend.
The Saints continue with a string of opponents from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) when they face Carleton College next Saturday, Sept. 11 in Northfield starting at 3:30 p.m.
