DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team continued a streak of hard-luck losses in their Advantage Emblem Cup opener, as the 14th-ranked Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers squeaked out a 2-1 overtime victory at Saints Field on Friday afternoon.
Goalkeeper #Bailey Mahlum# (Jr.-Bismarck, N.D.) and the Saints defense gave another impressive showing, but the Saints could not net enough offense against Ali Nelson and the Concordia Cobbers to earn their first victory of the season.
Mahlum made seven saves for CSS as the Saints' defense continued to look strong. CSS took five shots, including three on goal against Nelson and the Cobbers.
Concordia broke through just 24 seconds into the game as their leading scorer from 2009, Sam Johnson, scored her first of the season to put the Cobbers up 1-0. Sarah Rounds and Abby Habein had the assists.
CSS scored its first goal of the 2010 campaign as #Andrea Beatt# (So.-Maple Grove, Minn.) slipped one in off a #Joey Moore# (So.-Duluth, Minn.) free kick to tie up the game 14 minutes into the second half.
CSS played stalwart defense throughout the second frame, forcing overtime before the Cobbers' Habein was able to score the game-winner. Gina Weiss had the assist for Concordia.
With the victory, Concordia now has eight points, good for second in the Advantage Emblem Cup standings, behind the University of Wis.-Stout, who scored 10 points thanks to a 5-0 victory over Northland College earlier in the afternoon. CSS is in third with one point, and Gustavus Adolphus will have its tournament opener tomorrow afternoon.
The Saints will face Gustavus Adolphus in the final game of the Advantage Emblem Cup on Sunday at Saints Field. The kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
