ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team settled for another split Saturday on the second day of the Holiday Inn-Vitational, hosted by the College of St. Benedict.
The Saints (11-4) opened the day at 9 a.m. this morning with a sweep (25-20, 25-13, 25-21) of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) rival University of Minnesota-Morris (6-5).
#Anna Zyvoloski# led the Saints with 12 kills. #Paige Hardy# added 10 kills. #Nikki Hughes# had a team-high 14 digs and four service aces. #Sarah Kurtovich# accumulated 25 set assists.
In the final match of the Inn-Vitational for the Saints, they went up against 16th-ranked St. Olaf College.
The Oles (10-3) used a 7-0 run in the first set to take it 25-15. The second set was back-and-forth early, but the Saints used an 8-0 run late to tie the match by winning the set 25-23.
St. Scholastica then took an early 5-0 lead in the third set and was later up 18-13. However, the Oles would tie the set at 19-19. With the Saints up 23-22, St. Olaf scored the final three points to win it 25-23.
In the fourth set, the Saints trailed 18-10, but never gave up as they kept inching closer and closer. CSS got the score 24-23, but it was a little too late as the Oles ended the match with a kill to win the set 25-23.
Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and
Paige Hardy (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) each had 18 kills to lead CSS.
Sarah Kurtovich (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) had six kills to go along with 42 set assists.
Nikki Hughes (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern HS) had 18 digs and was named to the all-tournament team.
The Saints begin UMAC play next weekend as the Saints travel to Presentation on Friday night and the University of Minnesota-Morris on Saturday.
