Saints rally to defeat St. Kate's in Five; Fall to St. Ben's in Four

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team rallied to win its first match against the College of St. Catherine, but fell in four sets to host College of St. Benedict Friday night in the Holiday Inn-Vitational.

In the first match against the College of the St. Catherine (2-8) the Saints dominated the first set, winning 25-7, but dropped the next two sets 27-25 and 25-23. The Saints stayed alive by taking the fourth set 25-16 and then took the fifth set in overtime 17-15 to win their sixth straight match. It was the first five-set win of the season for the Saints.

#Anna Zyvoloski# and #Paige Hardy# each had 19 kills. Hardy, along with #Nikki Hughes#, had a team high-high 25 digs. #Sarah Kurtovich# had 47 set assists.

In the nightcap against host, College of St. Benedict (6-6), the Saints dropped the first two sets, stayed alive in the third set, but fell in overtime in the fourth set, snapping their six-match win streak.

St. Ben's would not trail in first set winning 25-18. In the second set, the Blazers jumped out to an 8-1 lead and even though the Saints scored the next six points to cut the margin to 8-7, St. Ben's held on to the lead the entire to set to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-23 set victory.

The Saints staved off the sweep by controlling the third set, including going on an 8-0 run to win 25-17. The fourth set was tight throughout with 11 ties and seven lead changes. The Saints had two set points at 24-23 and 25-24, but the Blazers stayed alive and ended up taking the match in four sets, winning 28-26.

Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) led the way with a season-high 20 kills. Paige Hardy (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) added 11 kills and two service aces. #Molly Roith# led the team with 19 digs.

The Saints continue at the St. Ben's Holiday Inn-Vitational tomorrow when it faces fellow Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) school Minnesota-Morris at 9 a.m. and the then 16th-ranked St. Olaf College at 11 a.m.
