CSS VOLLEYBALL GOES 2-0 ON FIRST DAY OF GUSTAVUS CLASSIC

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team improved to 7-2 with a pair of wins over Martin Luther College and host, Gustavus Adolphus at the Gustavus Classic.

The Saints began the night against fellow Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC)-foe Martin Luther. CSS defeated the Knights in a non-conference matchup 25-22, 27-25, 25-20.

The Saints recorded a match-high 16 kills in the opening set. #Anna Zyvoloski# had 17 kills to lead St. Scholastica. #Paige Hardy# followed with eight kills. #Nikki Hughes# had a team-high 15 digs.

Against the host, Gusties, the pulled out a tight match 22-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22. It was the first road win against Gustavus Adolphus in the series history.

The Saints led 21-17 in the first set, but Gustavus rallied to win 25-22.

CSS would lead for the majority of the second set and evened up the match 1-1 winning by that same 25-22 score. The third set was also tight with the largest margin being four points early on. With the score tied at 20, the Saints recorded the final five points of the set to win 25-20 and take a 2-1 match lead.

It was 21-21 in the fourth set, but the Saints would get the next three points and then a Paige Hardy (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) kill ended the match as CSS prevailed 25-22.

Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) led the way with 17 kills once again, followed by Hardy with 13 kills. Hardy also led the way with 20 digs. #Megan Windschitl# and #Taylor Tyllia# each added seven kills. #Sarah Kurtovich# had 43 set assists.

The 7-2 start by the Saints is the best since the 2001 season. Gustavus falls to 3-2 with the loss. The Gusties were led by Emily Phillips with 17 kills. There were 24 ties and eight lead changes in the match.

The Saints will conclude the Gustavus Classic tomorrow when they face Carleton College at 10 a.m. and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls at noon.
