DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team held Macalester scoreless for the first 81 minutes, but the Scots scored two late goals to down the Saints in the season opener for both teams Wednesday at Saints Field.
The young Saints played a defensive-minded game, keeping the veteran Scots off the board for 90-percent of the game. The Saints defense was led by strong performances by newcomer #Logan Williamson# (Fr.-Bloomington, Minn.) and goalkeeper #Bailey Mahlum# (Jr.-Bismarck, N.D.), who made seven outstanding saves to keep the Saints in the game.
Keeping Macalester off the scoreboard usually means shutting out senior forward Emily Bardwell, who scored 16 goals for the Scots in 2009. CSS kept Bardwell quiet throughout the first half, but she finally broke through with a score, assisted by Jordan Eckstein, in the 81st minute.
Her fellow senior, Lauryn Gutierrez followed it up with a goal just three-and-a-half minutes later to put the Scots up 2-0, a lead that they would not relinquish.
The Scots defense held strong in front of Rose Glenn-Fisher, who stopped the Saints' two shots on goal, one each by #Megan Stingle# (So.-Duluth, Minn.) and #Taylor Cunningham# (Fr.-Eau Claire, Wis.). The Scots outshot CSS 17-6 overall.
The Saints will host the Advantage Emblem Cup at Saints Field this Labor Day weekend. Five teams will compete in the women's division with each team playing two games. The Saints open with 14th-ranked Concordia-Moorhead on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
