DULUTH, Minn. – Freshman #Brett Tester# (
Fr.-Andover, Minn.) made two free throws with two seconds on the clock to give the St. Scholastica men's basketball team a 73-71 come-from-behind victory tonight over Crown College at Reif Gym.
The Saints improve to 8-14 overall and to 5-6 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The Storm fall to 3-19 overall and to 3-8 in the conference.
The Storm jumped on top of the Saints, going up 27-14 with 10 minutes to go in the first half. CSS responded with a 12-2 run to cut the margin to three and later took its first lead on a #Derek Anderson# (
Jr.-Cook, Minn.) lay-up with 3:41 to go in the half. Crown regained the lead with a 6-0 run. A #Logan Schultz# (
Jr.-Perham, Minn.) put back at the end of the first half made the score 42-40 Crown.
The Saints shot 42-percent in the first half, while Crown shot 55-percent. The Storm made six, 3-pointers in the half. The Saints owned the paint, out-rebounding the Storm 21-14 and outscoring them 20-6.
Crown went up by nine with 16 minutes to go in the contest. The Saints scored the next six points to cut the lead down to three. A #Chris Hamers# (
Jr.-Onamia, Minn.) 3-pointer gave the Saints a 58-57 lead with 8:30 to go.
The Storm then went on a 6-0 run to go back up by five. With less than four minutes to go in the game the Saints went on a 9-0, with five points coming from #Danny Schmitz# (
Jr.-Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson),to go up by four. Crown then hit a jumper and forced a CSS turnover which led to a layup to tie the game with 30 seconds to go.
Following a Saints timeout,
Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) took the ball to the basket and was fouled in the process with two seconds on the clock. Tester calmly knocked down both free throws to put the Saints up 73-71. Crown had a good look at 3-pointer as time expired, but the shot was off target as the Saints prevailed 73-71.
The Saints outscored the Storm 38-20 in the paint for the game and had a 23-5 advantage in second-chance points. CSS shot 43-precent for the game, while Crown shot 48-percent.
Chris Hamers (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) earned his first career double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Logan Schultz (Perham, Minn./Perham HS) had 14 points,
Danny Schmitz (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) added 13, and
Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) scored 12. Jake Jarvis had 16 points to pace Crown.
Tomorrow will be the regular season home finale for the Saints as they will host rival Northwestern College at Reif Gym. It will be Senior Day as the Saints honor lone senior
