HOUGHTON, Mich. – St. Scholastica junior #Eleanor Magnuson# led the Saints Saturday in the first regional test of the ski season, the 5km freestyle at the Husky Challenge, hosted by Michigan Tech University.

Magnuson's time of 16:44.4 was good enough for ninth place in the four-team field that included Northern Michigan, Michigan Tech, Wisconsin Green Bay, and the Saints.

Green Bay's Carolyn Freeman won handily in a time of 15:28.1, twenty-five seconds faster than Northern Michigan's Christina Turman who finished in 15:53.1. Ingrid Fjeldheim finished third, 4.9 seconds behind Turman. Northern Michigan won the women's event taking spots 2, 3, and 4.

CSS freshman #Brooke Adams# finished 16th in a time of 17:32.9. Senior #Julia Curry# finished 21st in 18:07.1 to round out the Saints scoring, and the trio of Saints on the start. The Saints women finished fourth with 10 points.

“It was a nice day for racing this early in the season—great conditions and the women worked hard,” said Saints head coach #Chad Salmela#. “As a coach, these first few weekends are always hard, because I don't prepare the team much for these early races. I know some of the women hoped to race a little better, but all I wanted to see was an effort—something to prime the pump for more racing down the road. I'm happy with what they did.”

The Saints men and women combined finished second on the day behind Northern Michigan. The Saints women take the tracks Sunday again in Houghton for the 5km classic.
