DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team finished up play at the Land of Magic Classic with a 70-55 loss to Buena Vista University (Iowa) on Thursday afternoon.
A day after tying a program record and setting a Land of Magic Classic record with 10, 3-pointers, #Derek Anderson# continued his hot shooting down in Florida making a pair of 3-pointers early for CSS's first points of the game and scoring 12 of the team's first 15 points. Anderson would have five, 3-pointers in the first 12 minutes of action.
The Saints (2-8) went on a 9-0 run in the first five minutes of the game to take an early 12-6 lead. St. Scholastica held that margin until the Beavers (5-7) went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 23-23 with five minutes left in the first half. The teams then exchanged the lead in the last five minutes with Buena Vista taking a 31-30 advantage into the locker room.
The lead exchanged hands for the first five minutes of the second half until the Beavers went on an another 8-0 run to take a 47-39 lead with 12 minutes to go. CSS got it back to five, but that is as close as they would get as Buena Vista went on to win 70-55.
The Saints shot 40-percent for the game, while the Beavers were held to 39-percent, but shot 44-percent in the second half. BVU had the advantage on the glass 40-30 and outscored the Saints 13-3 in second-chance points.
Derek Anderson (Cook, Minn./Cook HS) finished with eight, 3-pointers for the game and had a game-high 26 points. #Brett Tester# added 10 points and nine rebounds. #Danny Schmitz# also chipped in with 10 points. Troy Ticknor had 24 points to pace the Beavers.
The Saints will be off until Tuesday, January 11th when they open up Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play at Northland College. The tip-off for that game is scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m., following the women's game.
