DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Senior #Derek Anderson# went for a career-high 34 points and matched a program record with 10, 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough as the St. Scholastica men's basketball team fell in overtime to Union College (N.Y.) 84-80 at the Land of Magic Classic on Wednesday.
Anderson got off to a hot start connecting on three, 3-point field goals in the first two minutes to give the Saints (2-7) an early 9-5 lead. Anderson drilled another 3-pointer to extend St. Scholastica's lead to 18-10 with 14 minutes to go in the half.
The margin got as high as 11 with seven minutes to go before the Dutchmen (6-1) went on a 13-3 run to take the lead at 31-30. However, it was Anderson again with his fifth, 3-pointer of the half in the waning moments to give CSS a 33-31 halftime advantage.
Anderson kept it going hitting another 3-pointer to start the second half. With Union up 48-47, Anderson hit back-to-back trifectas to put the Saints back up 53-48 with 12 minutes to go. Anderson's 10, 3-pointers matched a program record set twice before by Derek Johnson in 2006 and Nate Higgins in 1995. It also set a Land of Magic Classic Record.
The Saints opened up a seven-point lead with 4:49 to go following a #Danny Schmitz# 3-pointer. The Dutchmen answered with a 7-0 run to tie it at 68-68 with 2:38 left to play.
After #Brett Tester# made 1-of-2 at the free throw line, Union came down and hit a 3-pointer to take a 71-69 lead with 44 seconds on the clock. #Jonah Dahlman# would be fouled on the proceeding possession and converted both free throws to tie it again at 71-71. Union got one more chance at the end of regulation, but could not convert as the game went to overtime.
In overtime, the Dutchmen jumped out and scored the first five points. The Saints eventually crawled back in it and tied the game at 80-80 after a
Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) field goal with 32 seconds left. Union's Joe Mason converted the go-ahead basket with five seconds left and then the Dutchmen converted two free throws to make the final score 84-80.
CSS shot 45-percent from the field, while Union was 49-percent. The Saints shot just 65-percent from the free throw line, while the Dutchmen were 84-percent. Union also outscored the Saints 16-0 in fast break points.
Derek Anderson (Cook, Minn./Cook HS)'s 34 points are the most scored by a Saints player in a game since Derek Johnson had 36 points against Northwestern College in 2007.
Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) had his third double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Jonah Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) added 14 points and six assists. Justin Gallo had 26 points to lead the Dutchmen.
The Saints will play their final game of the Land of Magic Classic tomorrow when they face Buena Vista University (Iowa) at 2 p.m. local time.
