Men’s Basketball Takes Out Lions in Overtime

HANCOCK, Mich. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team needed overtime to defeat Finlandia University 82-76 on Saturday at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

Finlandia (1-10) took the early lead within the first minute of the game and only surrendered the lead three times in the first half. The Saints (2-5) were off in the first half from behind the three-point line, only making one 3-pointer in the first half. The Lions shot 48-percent from the field, while the Saints shot 41-percent. Despite those numbers, the Saints closed the half on an 8-1 run and had a 30-26 halftime advantage.

The Saints had a 12-point lead at one point in the second half, but surrendered it within the last few minutes of regulation. The Saints had a chance with 25 seconds left to play to win the game when #Derek Anderson# was fouled on a 3-point attempt down two. He made his first one, but then missed the second one. Still down by one, Anderson sunk his third shot to force overtime with the score tied 66-66.

The teams exchanged baskets to begin overtime, but the Saints never trailed going on a 9-1 run to seal the 82-76 victory.

#Brett Tester#'s 22 points led CSS and 18 of those points came in the second half and beyond. #Danny Schmitz# added 17 points and Derek Anderson (Cook, Minn./Cook HS) had 15 points. #Jonah Dahlman# pitched in with 12 points and seven assists. #Logan Schultz# had eight points and eight rebounds. Jerrod Owens 25 points led Finlandia.

The Saints will be at home on Wednesday when they host Twin Ports rival University of Wisconsin-Superior at Reif Gymnasium. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and can be seen live, courtesy of the iFan Sports Network, at csssaints.com.
