DULUTH, Minn. – Northwestern College's lone goal early in the second half was enough to upset the top-seeded and regular season champion St. Scholastica women's soccer team 1-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship game on Saturday at Saints Field.

With the win, the Eagles receive the conference's first automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament. The selections will be announced Monday morning. The loss by the Saints snaps a 17-game unbeaten streak and a run of three consecutive UMAC Tournament titles.

CSS controlled much of the action in the first half, outshooting the Eagles 8-3 and had four corner kicks, while Northwestern had none. The Saints managed to put three on net, all three were stopped.

The Eagles came out much more aggressively at the start of the second half and that aggression paid off as Kyrie Jorgenson picked up a rebound and flipped it into the net in the 49th minute to make it 1-0.

Just following that goal, the Eagles had good opportunities to extend their lead, but #Bailey Mahlum# made a couple of saves to keep it a one-goal game.

The Saints had a couple of opportunities late, but could not manage to put a ball on net as Northwestern prevailed 1-0.

CSS out-shot Northwestern 13-9 in the game, but it was tied 3-3 on shots on goal. Bailey Mahlum (Bismarck, N.D./Bismarck HS) had three saves in the loss, while Tara Hanson had three saves to earn the shutout. Kyrie Jorgenson was named UMAC Tournament Most Valuable Player.

After three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, the Saints' season will come to an end with an overall record of 16-5-2. However, the future remains bright as they graduate just two seniors from this year's team, which was made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores.
