DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team had 21 attack errors and Northwestern College took advantage, defeating the Saints in three sets (25-15, 25-20, 25-14) to capture the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament Championship in front of 561 fans at Reif Gymnasium.
The loss snaps a 12-match win streak for the Saints and is just the second loss at home this season. With the win the Eagles (26-13) receive the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
CSS took an early 5-1 lead in the opening set and later led 8-6 before the Eagles went on an 11-0 run to take a commanding lead at 17-8. Northwestern went on to take the first set 25-15.
The Saints then scored the first point of the second set, but that would be their only lead of the set as the Eagles won 25-20.
In the third set, the Saints led 3-1, but the Eagles scored nine of the next 11 points and went on to win comfortably 25-14.
The Saints had an attack percentage of .099, their third-lowest of the season. The Eagles on the other hand had a .367 attack percentage.
#Anna Zyvoloski# had 11 kills to lead the Saints. #Taylor Tyllia# followed with eight kills. Chelsea Koth had a match-high 13 kills to lead Northwestern. Leah Kostek had 34 set assists and was named the Tournament MVP.
The Saints' record now stands at 28-7. Even though they didn't get the automatic qualifier, CSS still has a chance at receiving an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament. The Saints are currently ranked eighth in the NCAA Central Region rankings. The selection show will be streamed live on NCAA.com at 10 a.m. Monday.
