DULUTH, Minn. – The preseason Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) favorite proved to be too much for the St. Scholastica football team as Greenville defeated the Saints 35-7 Saturday at Public Schools Stadium.
The Greenville (3-3, 2-0 UMAC) defense was dominant throughout, holding the Saints in check for much of the game. The CSS (3-3, 1-2 UMAC) defense also played well for the first 30 minutes of action. Both teams had just 96 yards of total offense combined in the first half.
The Saints went three-and-out on their first five possessions and the Panthers were finally able to break through the CSS defense on their fifth possession when Anthony Ambers scored from two yards out to make it 7-0 with six minutes to go in the second quarter. The score was setup on a 25-yard run on fourth-and-6 a play earlier.
Greenville then took control of the game in the second half, scoring touchdowns on its first three possessions. All three scores were by Ambers of 14, 1, and 67 yards to make it 28-0 at the end of the third quarter.
Justin Honeycutt's 71-yard run with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter made it 35-0. The Saints' lone score of the day came on a #Cole Houston# to #Tyler Olson# 21-yard reception with a little over one minute to go to make the final tally 35-7.
Greenville outgained CSS 310-132 in the game. 309 of those 310 yards came on the ground as the nation's eighth-leading rusher, Anthony Ambers ran for 221 yards. The 132 yards by the Saints is the lowest in a game in the last three years.
#Alex Thiry# was 17-of-37 for 102 yards, but was sacked six times. The Saints were sacked seven times, which tied a program record. #Keegan O'Neill# had four receptions. #Christopher Doran# had nine tackles and recovered a fumble to lead the defense.
The Saints will have the week off next week and will return to action in two weeks when they head to the University of Minnesota-Morris on October 23rd.
