SAINTS SNAP NORTHWESTERN’S UMAC UNBEATEN STREAK

DULUTH, Minn. – In a battle of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) unbeatens the St. Scholastica volleyball team came out on top, sweeping Northwestern College in three sets to end the Eagles 34-match regular season conference unbeaten streak Friday night at Reif Gymnasium.

The last UMAC team to defeat the Eagles (14-10, 5-1 UMAC) during the regular season was the Saints (17-6, 6-0 UMAC) way back on October 26, 2007 in five sets also at Reif Gym. 35 matches later, CSS repeated the feat. The last time the Saints swept the Eagles was back in the 2004 season.

It was also the first match of the Dig Pink Weekend for the Saints in support of breast cancer awareness.

In front of the largest volleyball crowd in just under three years (227), the Saints had their best hitting percentage of the match right from the start with a .559 attack percentage in the opening set. Down 6-5 in the set, the Saints went on a 7-0 run thanks to five kills by #Anna Zyvoloski#. CSS went on to take the opening set 25-18.

The second set was tight with nine ties, but with the score 18-18, the Saints scored three straight points to take a 21-18 advantage. #Paige Hardy# then ended the set with a kill as the Saints went up 2-0, winning 25-22.

St. Scholastica jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set, but Northwestern battled back. With the score 17-17, the Saints went on a 7-0 run to go up 24-17. The Eagles hung in and fought off four match points. However, in the end it was a #Megan Windschitl# kills that gave the Saints the sweep, winning 25-21.

Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) led the way matching a season-high with 20 kills. #Taylor Tyllia# and Paige Hardy (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) added nine kills. Tyllia also had a .538 hitting percentage. #Sarah Kurtovich# had 41 set assists and #Nikki Hughes# had 11 digs.
