DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team defeated conference rival Northland College 3-0 to begin the night, but fell in three sets to 16th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Wednesday night in Reif Gymnasium.
The Saints (16-6, 5-0) began with Northland College (5-18, 1-5) and defeated the LumberJills in three sets (25-12, 25-9, 25-11). CSS never trailed in the match and match lasted just 53 minutes.
#Paige Hardy# had a team-high 11 kills, while #Anna Zyvoloski# was right behind her with 10 kills. #Taylor Tyllia# added eight kills. #Megan Windschitl# had four block assists to go along with five kills. The Saints finished with a .451 attack percentage, including a .611 percentage in the second set.
The 'Jills have not defeated the Saints since the 1997 season.
After 16th-ranked UW-Eau Claire (16-6) defeated Northland in three sets, the Blugolds squared off with the Saints to finish the night.
CSS struggled in the opening set with a -.032 hitting percentage as the Blugolds led for most of the set winning 25-16.
In the second set, the Blugolds used a 7-0 midway through to build a nine-point lead. The Saints battled back to thanks to some superb blocking to make it 15-13. With the score 19-18, the Blugolds took the next three points and eventually the set 25-21.
Eau Claire proved to be too strong in the third set leading from the on-set on its way to ending the match in three, 25-19.
Paige Hardy (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) led the way once again for the Saints with 11 kills. #Kayla Horbacz# had four kills and six block assists. #Sarah Kurtovich# had 24 set assists and #Nikki Hughes# had a team-high 15 digs. The loss is the first by the Saints in Reif Gym this season (6-1).
The Saints will host a Dig Pink Weekend at Reif Gymnasium on Friday night and Saturday in support of breast cancer awareness.
