DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team moved within a win of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Regular Season Championship as they defeated Martin Luther College on Saturday afternoon by a 6-1 final.
With the victory, CSS (12-4-1, 11-0-1 UMAC) needs just one conference win next weekend to clinch the the top seed in the UMAC Postseason Tournament. Martin Luther falls to 7-9-1 (4-6-1 UMAC) with the loss.
Sophomore #Kaylee Gombold# got the scoring started for CSS in the 11th minute as she netted her fifth of the year, with assists from #Megan Stingle# and #Nicole Brandt#. Gombold scored her sixth later in the game with assists from Stingle and #Logan Williamson#.
#Andrea Beatt# netted her seventh of the year at 36:05 in the first, with an assist from #Shannon Carlson#.
Megan Stingle (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) came back with her third goal of the year ten minutes into the second half to pull ahead 4-0, with an assist from #Megan Flesvig#. Stingle has scored in three of the Saints' past five games.
Martin Luther got on the board late in the second half as Alydia Lee took a long shot which went just over the head of the Saints' goalkeeper. Bethany Schultz had the assist.
The Saints responded with a goal in the 80th minute, as #Hannah Roy# scored her fourth with assists from #Shannon Lee# and #Megan Marolt#.
#Shannon Carlson# closed out the scoring for the Saints as she scored an unassisted tally in the closing seconds of the match to secure the 6-1 final.
#Molly Bergmann# started in net for the Saints and got the win, making one save. #Jane Goldfarb# relieved her in the final 12 minutes, making one save in her first varsity action.
The Saints will go out of conference on Tuesday when they battle the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for the Chalice. The Saints won it last year on a Megan Stingle (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) overtime goal. The action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in River Falls.
