SAINTS WIN EIGHTH STRAIGHT

MANKATO, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball won its seventh and eighth consecutive matches on Saturday, defeating both Bethany Lutheran College and Coe College (Iowa) in three sets.

The Saints improve to 24-6 overall and 11-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The 24 victories are the most since the 2001 season. The program record for wins in a season is 32. The 2001 season is also the last time the Saints won eight straight matches.

The Saints began the day by taking care of Bethany Lutheran (10-13, 5-6 UMAC) in a conference match 25-18, 25-19, 25-20.

#Megan Windschitl# had three straight kills to begin the match. After trailing 8-4 in the second set, the Saints went on a 7-0 run and then scored seven of the final nine points of the set. CSS then trailed 20-18 in the third set, but rattled off seven straight points to end it in three.

#Anna Zyvoloski# had 14 kills to lead the Saints. #Paige Hardy# had nine kills, a team-high 12 digs, and four block assists. Hardy reached 700 career kills in the match. #Taylor Tyllia# added eight kills. #Kayla Horbacz# had six block assists. #Sarah Kurtovich# reached 1,000 set assists on the season in the contest.

The Saints then went out of conference to face Coe College (16-13) and defeated the Kohawks 25-22, 25-20, 25-18.

St. Scholastica seemed to have the first set in hand, leading 23-18 after four straight Zyvoloski kills, but the Kohawks cut it to 23-22. A Paige Hardy (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) kill ended the rally and the Saints hung to take the opening set.

The Saints broke open the second set with a 6-0 run and had an 8-0 run in the third set to end the match in three.

Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) had a match-high 21 kills, while Hardy added 12 kills and team-high 14 digs. Hardy went over 800 career digs. Sarah Kurtovich (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) had 38 set assists and #Nikki Hughes# had three service aces.

The Saints will have a mid-week match next week as they will head to Ashland, Wis. to face Northland College. With a victory, the Saints can clinch at least a share of the regular season conference title. The action is set to begin at 7 p.m.
