DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team had to come from behind in a couple of sets to stay unbeaten in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action on Friday night, defeating the University of Minnesota-Morris in four sets at Reif Gymnasium.
The Saints (19-6, 8-0 UMAC) have not been 8-0 in conference play since the 1999 season and have never been 9-0. On top of that, the Saints improve to 9-1 at home, the most wins at Reif Gym in a season since the '99 season. The 19 wins also match last year's win total with eight matches still left this season.
In the first set, the Saints went on a 5-0 run early to take a 10-6 lead and would never relinquish the advantage the rest of the way, taking the set 25-18.
St. Scholastica led 8-5 in the second set, but the Cougars responded with a 5-0 run of their own to take a 10-8 lead. Morris then held off the Saints to even the match, winning the second set 25-22.
The Cougars then were in control of the third set, leading 18-9 at one point. However, the Saints kept fighting and cut the margin to 21-17. The Cougars then would lead 24-18, but after a service error made it 24-19, #Nikki Hughes# would serve up seven straight points with three kills coming from #Anna Zyvoloski# during that span to give the Saints the 26-24 set win as the Reif was rocking.
The Cougars kept their composure and registered the first four points of the fourth set. Morris led 16-12 later in the set, but the Saints would go on a 9-2 run to take a 23-18 lead. #Megan Windschitl# ended the match with a kills as the Saints 25-20.
#Paige Hardy# had a season-high 22 kills and also led the team with 18 digs.
Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) had her highest kill total in a Saints uniform with 21. #Sarah Kurtovich# had 49 set assists and
Nikki Hughes (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern HS) added 17 digs, while #Molly Roith# had 12 digs.
The Saints will play their final regular season home matches of the season tomorrow when they host Presentation College at noon and 10th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 3 p.m. The Oshkosh may start earlier, pending the length of the first matches for both teams.
