DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team had Martin Luther College down two sets to one, but was unable to hold off the Knights, dropping the match in five sets in tonight's home opener.
The loss sends the Saints to a 5-10 overall record, while the Knights improve to 6-9. This was also the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener for both teams. This was the first time this season the Saints lost a match, in which, they captured the first set.
The first set was close early, but the Saints used a 9-1 run halfway through to win the set going away 25-16. CSS had a .560 attack percentage in the set.
The Saints kept the momentum going into the second set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. However, following a timeout, Martin Luther would score the next nine points. With the score 20-20, the Knights took the next five points and the set 25-20.
The Saints started out fast once again in the third set, taking a 7-1 lead, but this time would not relinquish the lead and take the set 25-14. CSS then had a 19-10 lead in the fourth set and were just six points away from victory until the Knights went on a 10-1 run to even the score at 20-20. The score was 23-23, but a couple of miscues by the Saints gave the Knights the fourth set 25-23.
The fifth-and-deciding set would be close with numerous ties and lead changes. With the score 10-10, Martin Luther would get a couple of kills to take a 12-10 lead. After a #Rebecca Udermann# (
Sr.-Rosemount, Minn.) kill narrowed the gap, the Knights would take the next three points and the match 15-11.

Fr.-Hibbing, Minn.) led the Saints with 12 kills, while #Jordan Beach# (
Jr.-Big Fork, Minn.) added 11 kills. #Sarah Kurtovich# (
Fr.-Andover, Minn.) had 26 set assists and #Alyssa McDonald# (
Fr.-Chisholm, Minn.) 18 set assists.
Rebecca Udermann (Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) had seven block assists to go with eight kills.
The Saints will host a triangular tomorrow on Homecoming at CSS. The Saints will open the day with a match against Bethany Lutheran College at 11 a.m. Bethany Lutheran and the University of Wisconsin-Superior will then play at 1 p.m. The day culminates with the Saints facing rival UW-Superior at 3 p.m. All of the action will take place in Reif Gym at the Burns Wellness Commons.
