SAINTS DROP A PAIR TO OPEN THE SEASON

ASHLAND, Wis. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team began the 2009 season with a pair of losses to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) schools today at the Northland College Quadrangular.

The Saints first were defeated by the University of Wisconsin-Superior 3-1 and then fell in a close match to the University of Wisconsin-Stout 3-2.

Too many mistakes did the Saints in today. In the first match of the day against UW-Superior the Saints fell in four sets. The Yellowjackets took the first two sets 25-19 and 25-17. The Saints avoided being swept by taking the third set 25-20. However, the Yellowjackets closed out the match, winning the fourth set 25-16.

In the second match of the day, the Saints took UW-Stout to the wire, but came up just short losing in five sets.

The Blue Devils took the opening set 25-15, but the Saints responded by taking the second set 25-23. Stout regained control of the match by taking the third set 25-21. CSS would not give up and force a fifth-and-deciding set by taking the fourth set 25-20. In the fifth set, the Blue Devils would take down the Saints by a narrow 15-13 margin.

The Saints will take part in the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Labor Day Classic this Friday and Saturday in Eau Claire. On Friday, CSS will face Judson University (Ill.) at 3 p.m. and UW-Eau Claire at 5:15 p.m.
